2012 Southern Indiana Wind Ensemble Composition Competition

[Also available in PDF format]

The Southern Indiana Wind Ensemble invites submissions of original works for the first annual Southern Indiana Wind Ensemble Composition Competition.

Eligibility

The competition is open to any high school, undergraduate, or graduate student enrolled in school in the state of Indiana as of the application deadline.

Instrumentation

Standard wind ensemble/concert band. Maximum instrumentation (some parts will be doubled): Piccolo, 2 Flutes, 3 Bb Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, 2 Oboe, English Horn, 4 Saxophones (either AATB or SATB), 4 Horns, 6 Trumpets/Cornets/Flugel Horn, 4 Trombones/Bass Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba, Double Bass, Timpani, 4 Percussion, Piano

Criteria

The composition should be no longer than six minutes.

Submitted compositions must be original and have been completed no more than two years prior to the submission deadline.

There are no constraints on musical style, affect, tempo, etc. Overall musical quality will be weighted more heavily than technical complexity. Compositions of difficulty level 4 (medium) to 4.5 (medium-hard) are particularly encouraged. This allows for (but does not require) the use of the full standard range of all instruments, solo passages, and the free use of syncopation.

Submission

Applicants should submit: (1) a completed application form and a legible, spiral-bound score, postmarked by the application deadline, mailed to Eric Isaacson, Music Director; Southern Indiana Wind Ensemble; 807 S Brighton Crest; Bloomington, IN 47401, and (2) a PDF file of the score, sent via email to isaacso@indiana.edu by the application deadline. The score should not bear the name of the composer. The submission deadline is November 15, 2011. There is no entry fee.

Judging, Notification, Performance

A panel consisting of at least three people, to include the music director of the Southern Indiana Wind Ensemble, a composer from the state of Indiana, and a collegiate band director from the state of Indiana, will judge the submissions. The panel reserves the right not to name a winner.

The winner will be notified by January 31, 2012, and will receive a cash prize of $250. The winner will be expected to provide a new bound copy of the score printed on 11x17” paper and a full set of parts by February 15, 2012. The score (and parts, if practical) must include the text, “Winner of the 2012 Southern Indiana Wind Ensemble Composition Competition.” The composer retains full publication rights.

The Southern Indiana Wind Ensemble will perform the winning composition as part of its concert on May 9, 2012, at Bloomington High School North.

The Southern Indiana Wind Ensemble Composition Competition is sponsored by the Stafford Music Academy and private donations.

Based in Bloomington, the Southern Indiana Wind Ensemble performs music for winds and percussion at the highest artistic level, engages with a diverse audience, and enhances the greater artistic community.
